"They may forget my name, but they will never forget how I made them feel."

Tuesday, 30 July 2019

Raymond Tan, the Director of Nursing (DON) who has been well respected in this industry for the past 30 years, has now just joined Charis Manor as the Nursing Director - a mid to high-end boutique new age nursing home in Kallang. Charis Manor aims to expound the fact that old age is a time for celebration and enjoyment of life when one has fulfilled life’s responsibility to the family and society.

At Raymond’s age, he never stops working when everyone else in his nursing cohort are retired. His very first encounter with the nursing home industry is with a sheltered home where residents can still care for themselves with minimum supervision. This is the beginning of his nursing home career since early 1990's.

Raymond says: “My happiest moment is when a dementia resident has been stabilised and settled in their setting and this achievement is not easy to come by. It takes time and patience and also with professional intervention from our doctors. They may forget my name, but they will never forget how I made them feel in this journey.” He also mentioned: “the Charis Manor building is also designed to be dementia friendly. There are regular activities for the elderly residents to engage in which help in slowing down the process of dementia. ”

When Raymond was asked why he chose to work in this nursing home, he replied as: “ChariS Manor being boutique sized and conceptualised with a  cosy home environment allows him to really provide residents with person centre care where he can give them more individualized attention, time and resources. “

Charis Manor is a teaching nursing home owned by CSM Academy International, an Edutrusted Private Education Institute which delivers healthcare education, such as the SNB accredited BSc Nursing & Health (Top-up) Degree in partnership with the University of Dundee, Certificate in Therapy Services, WSQ Diploma/Specialist Diploma/Graduate Diploma in Clinical Research, etc.

“Students at CSM Academy International have the privilege of an authentic learning environment at the basement of Charis Manor, which is equipped with a Simulation Centre and Rehabilitation Centre, where the elderly do their daily rehabilitation and the students could engage with the elderly.  For the elderly, it is just as beneficial for them to interact with the younger students just as it is beneficial for the students to be in the actual environment and not just a classroom setting.  This concept of a teaching nursing home is the one and only in Singapore now.” Raymond says.

Ms Lynn Chow, the Board Director of both Charis Manor Nursing home and CSM Academy International would like to take this special opportunity to salute all our nurses nationwide for their hardwork and dedication  and wish them “A Happy Nurses’ Day.”
